Sand Crab Hunting
August 12th, 2008
One of the gang’s favorite activities at camp is the nighttime sand crab hunt. The kids all love it (well, most of them) and they look forward to the sun going down so they can grab their buckets, flashlights and nets and hit the beach. Of course, some are braver than others…
But most wait for the adults to catch them. Especially the big ones!
My son, a bit of a panty, still won’t touch them but insists on having a net and a bucket to fill with crabs. Well, a bucket for others to fill with crabs for him. My daughter loves the crabs too but her bravery has waned as she gets older. At 2 she was eagerly grabbing the crabs with her hands and chasing them down the beach, but now at 4 will only do it with a net. I have to admit, I enjoy the hunt as much as the kids and love seeing their excitement as they spot the crabs. At the end of the hunt everyone sees who caught the most, who has the biggest ones and who got pinched. Then all the crabs are released to go home to their little crab houses in the sand, only to be caught again the next night!

Sounds like fun, but these little guys don’t look fun!
I can only imagine all the kids running down the beach..chasing the crabs….when we go to the beach our kids love to catch little fish/shrimp and crabs. Funny how this past time is only really fun when they are little…

That is SOO cool! My kids would totally love that! I am not sure if they would catch them with their hands either though as they wouldn’t want to get pinched. My girls will catch bugs and reptiles but only if they know they won’t get hurt. Thanks for sharing your fun activity!

Wow! In all the years I lived near the beach, I’ve never seen sand crabs! This looks like fun
But I suspect, my daughter and I would be a bit wussy in touching them with our bare hands.

Wow, that looks like a blast!
We took my 6 month old to the beach for the first time yesterday, and he just watched, wide-eyed at the water the entire time. He’d shift in his sling, each time I changed direction, so he could keep staring suspiciously at it.

Glad they had fun, and glad I wasn’t there since I would be screaming and wriggling up and down the beach if they come near me. You know how I am…a panty!

That looks like so much fun! How cute are those sand crabs? I love that we both had tiny crabs in our WW
LOL.

What a great quality of life you are living!!!! So much fun. I have very fond memories of Hawaii. Lived there when I was 6-9 (1978-1981).
