Hawaii Recipe: Beachcombers Spareribs

September 19th, 2008

Growing up in Hawaii, my family didn’t have a lot of money.  My parents were very young and just out of college and we rented a run-down shack cozy cottage in the foothills of Tantalus. I have great memories of our time there, particularly of the bees that lived in my bedroom wall next […]

Celebrating Memorial Day in Hawaii

May 27th, 2008

Over the weekend we watched them set up for the big Memorial Day celebration at Ala Moana Beach park, which happens to be down the street from our condo. We have a great view of the beach from our balcony so we got to witness the progression of the elaborate set up for the […]

Water Balloon Battle

May 20th, 2008

This past weekend, Karen and I attended a birthday party for our friend’s two sons and we all had a blast. In what has become an annual tradition, the birthday boys’ Dad filled up water balloons for the kids (and parents) to play with in the park across the street from their home. […]

Catching Shrimp at Ala Wai Harbor

March 13th, 2008

There was a massacre at our house the other week…in the fish tank. The carnage was everywhere. Antennae, legs, teeny little claws…all scattered at the bottom of the tank. Our poor little Banded Coral Shrimp was attacked and apparently turned into a midnight snack while we slept peacefully in our beds. He […]

Trip to Chinatown

February 21st, 2008

Every now and then we like to take the kids to Chinatown. Mainly to get cheap and fresh produce, most of which is locally grown. In addition to produce, you can find all sorts of things in Chinatown - although some of it is a little scary (especially given all of the […]

Roy Yamaguchi Sauces

February 18th, 2008

My latest discovery at the supermarket is Roy Yamaguchi’s new line of marinade/dressing sauces. In case you’ve never heard of Roy Yamaguchi, he’s considered to be one of the originators of Pacific Rim/Hawaiian Fusion cuisine here in Hawaii. He’s a culinary legend of sorts with a million locations (okay, it’s more like 34) […]

Chinese New Year in Hawaii

February 7th, 2008

Feeding the Lion
Hawaii is full of a diverse group of ethnic cultures from Asia and the Pacific. Because of this, the lifestyle here in Hawaii is very much a melting pot of traditions, food, and celebrations. Sometimes it’s hard to remember whose tradition or culinary dish it is, it’s simply become […]

Birthday Party Venue: Waikiki Aquarium

January 30th, 2008

Our daughter’s first birthday bash was held at the Waikiki Aquarium (WAQ) on the outskirts of Waikiki. It’s a cute little aquarium and is a wonderful location to host a private party. The aquarium is situated on beachfront property with an expansive grassy lawn to set up tables and food for guests.

Tidepools at Sandy Beach

January 28th, 2008

One of our favorite weekend activities is to go to the tidepools and check out the critters that live there. Once in a while we’ll even catch some to take home for our saltwater tank. The tidepools at Sandy Beach on the eastern side of the island are a great place […]
