The Tooth Fairy: How much is she giving?

August 7th, 2008

Toothbrushing Graphic

TSO Jr just lost his first tooth and boy was he excited. He hasn’t even put it under his pillow yet since he wants to show it to everyone…his brothers, grandparents, the cashier at the grocery store (pretty much anyone who will listen)! Which is fine by me since it buys me some time to find out how much the “tooth fairy” gives for a tooth these days.  I have no idea!

For months, I have been explaining to TSO Jr that he has to take very good care of his teeth and brush regularly because honestly, the tooth fairy does not take dirty teeth.  Hey, it’s the truth!  This “tooth fairy” is not about to take a tooth that was not cleaned properly. TSO Jr did pay attention and has been taking care of his teeth so the “tooth fairy” wants to rewards his efforts but within reason (we’re not giving out the bank).

TSO Jr is running out of people to show off his tooth to so before that tooth makes it under his pillow, please let me know…how much money does the “tooth fairy” give for a tooth?

  • I tell you what, do not get the grandparents involved! My son has lost four teeth already and when he told nana she said “that one is really clean and well looked after, I think the Tooth Fairy will give you more for that one!” Grrr.
We give £1 (not sure what that translates to) but he knows it’s a lot of money and he knows he will only get it if he really looks after his teeth because if the Tooth Fairy picks up that tooth from under his pillow and it’s not up to scratch, she won’t be best pleased!

  • I remember getting quarters for my teeth as a kid…man I was rich…today, not so much. My daughter has lost 4 teeth so far and each time the toothfairy left her $2 (of which she saved in her piggy bank). I was going to just give her $1, but I thought 2 was more fun…what do I know?

  • I will be interested to see the comments here too. Miss J’s tooth is wiggling right now. So we will see.

BTW, a side topic here.. do you pull it out? Or do you wait till it falls out? Do you take him to the dentist? I don’t know what to do.

  • I have often wondered the same thing. When I was a kid I got a silver dollar for each tooth. So now what? Do I give two or three???? I like the idea of saying the tooth fairy only gives money for clean teeth! I will have to use that one!

  • Dennis had a tooth knocked out and we gave him 3 dollars for it.

  • Best way to get those wobbly teeth out - give them an apple to eat. Has worked a treat for mine!

  • Aw, come on - it’s worth $5 at least, especially a clean one!

  • My son’s fourth tooth has just fallen out tonight. He’s washed it, dried it and put it under his pillow. Says he’s saving up for a new game (I caught him checking for more wobbly teeth in the mirror!)

  • OK …let’s get real. By the third child and the 50th tooth…it seems like sharks live in the house….teeth are falling out every day and to boot…our tooth fairy is very unreliable. She has left teeth and given money, forgotten to come at all and taken teeth and forgotten to leave the money….our children know that we live on the unreliable tooth fairy route. They want to move…I am sure this fairy has other dissatisfied customers.
If you are on this fairy’s route, I would love to hear from you…then I will know that I am not the only failing parent . If you only have one child…I am confident that you do not have my tooth fairy.
    Cheers

  • You know, I honestly don’t remember how much I got. Maybe 50 cents? I just remember the cutest little pillow my Mom made for me. It had a tiny pocket to put the tooth, had a sticking of the tooth fairy on it, and in the morning there’d be money in the pocket and the tooth would be gone. Such fun!

  • This hasn’t happened to us yet, but I’m thinking a silver dollar would be cool. I guess I need to stock up soon!

  • Geez even the Tooth Fairy is going through inflation? So when my daughter starts losing her teeth in a couple of years, the price will go up again? I like the clean teeth thing though, that’s a great motivator. Do you think the tooth fairy concept teaches kids that we sell our body parts for money?

  • Girlie Girl’s first tooth received $5 and a toy. Then I did the math and realized that the tooth fairy could not afford to keep this up. Now she gets $2 a tooth and no toy.

  • Thanks for all the feedback everyone! My daughter has yet to start losing teeth but it’s good to know the going rate.

Angela - I really like the silver dollar idea- fancy fairy money!

Tara - you better watch out before your son starts pulling his teeth out before they’re ready! And I’ll remember those apples.

Julia - you sound like me. I can totally see myself doing one and forgetting about all the rest!

Amy - I’d just leave it alone. My husband had a patient bring in her child for a wiggling tooth. He just said to let it fall out on its own. No magic dentistry tricks!

Jojo - so what do think we’d get for a kidney? More than a silver dollar I hope!

Kailani - wow, I want to move to your house! That’s some sweet loot the fairy brings!

    - Kellie

  • My sister gives her kids $20! I think she’s crazy!
